3.9 Operator's compartment. The operator's compartment shall be large enough to permit comfortable operation by a minimum 250 pound driver without hampering movement.
A handrail located adjacent to the seat shall be furnished to safely assist the operator with entering or exiting the compartment. A seatbelt shall be furnished. In addition to the instruments supplied on the standard commercial vehicle, the following instruments and gauges shall be furnished: speedometer, hour-meter, oil pressure gauge, battery voltage indicator, water temperature gauge, hydraulic fluid pressure gauge, and fuel gauge. All instruments and gauges, except the hour-meter, shall be lighted and shall illuminate when the headlights are turned on. All controls and switches shall be clearly marked, identified, and shall be accessible by the operator while seated and seatbelt secured. Two adjustable sides mounted mirrors shall be provided, positioned, and mounted so that they do not obstruct the forward or side line-of-sight of the driver. When specified (see 7.3), a Falling Object Protective Structure (FOPS) shall be provided. When specified (see 7.3), an enclosed cab incorporating FOPS shall be provided.
3.10 Engine. The vehicle shall be powered by a standard commercial liquid cooled diesel engine. Horsepower and torque shall be sufficient to provide the performance specified herein. The engine shall operate on diesel fuel in accordance with A-A-52557 without detrimental effects to the engine or its performance. A fuel tank shall be provided of sufficient capacity to allow eight hours of continuous operation without refueling. The fuel system shall incorporate a water separator that is readily accessible and easily replaced. The engine shall be protected from the environment by a hinged engine cover. Engine exhaust shall not be directed toward the ground.
3.11 Transmission. A minimum of three forward and one reverse geared automatic transmission shall be furnished complete with a hydraulic torque converter that has a capacity of least 105 percent of the maximum net engine torque. The transmission shall be equipped with an
interlock system to prevent inadvertent engagement. The shifter interlock shall not permit engagement of the transmission in forward or reverse direction without application of the service brakes. The transmission shall be provided with transmission oil cooler or a fluid heat exchanger in the radiator.
3.12 Brakes, wheels and tires. The vehicle shall be equipped with four-wheel power assisted brakes capable of withstanding 250 pounds of brake force without component failure. Service brakes shall be capable of stopping the vehicle, at rated capacity, in a smooth controlled manner. Parking brake and service brakes shall be capable of independently holding the vehicle, at rated capacity, on a 21 percent incline in both ascending and descending slope directions. The brake pedal shall have a nonskid metal surface or replaceable rubber cap. The parking brake system shall be furnished with an illuminated warning light to indicate engagement. Tire and wheel assemblies shall be commercial items suitable for the vehicles intended usage.
3.13 Steering. The vehicle shall be furnished with power assisted steering.
