reprocessed to become a source of raw materials, as distinguished from virgin raw materials. The components, pieces and parts incorporated in the forklift truck may be newly fabricated from recovered materials to the maximum extent practicable, provided the forklift truck produced meets all other requirements of this specification. Used, rebuilt or remanufactured components, pieces and parts shall not be incorporated in the forklift truck.
3.4 Environmental requirements. The engine shall start without preheating within 5 minutes and the truck shall operate as specified herein within 15 minutes after engine start in any ambient temperature from -0 to 120 °F. When specified, see 6.2, ambient temperature required will be from -25 to 120 °F. Glow plugs to aid in starting are acceptable in lieu of priming system specified in 3.7.1.1.
3.5 Safety. The truck shall conform to the requirements of ANSI B 56.1,
UL 558, type D and OSHA standards in effect at the time of manufacture. When specified (see 6.2), the truck shall conform to the requirements of UL 558, type DS and OSHA standards in effect at the time of manufacture. For a DS type truck, the ambient temperature will be from 0 to 120 °F. For a DS type truck, the contractor shall submit to the contracting officer or designated representative, satisfactory evidence that the truck furnished under this specification meet or exceed the requirements of UL 558. Acceptable evidence of meeting these requirements shall be certified test reports from recognized
independent testing laboratories acceptable to the Government, indicating that
the truck conform to the technical requirements of UL 558. Also, the truck shall be furnished with a safety nameplate as specified herein.
3.5.1 Nuclear safety. When nuclear safety is specified (see 6.2), the truck shall be equipped with additional safety features as specified herein.
3.5.2. Fire extinguisher. When nuclear safety is specified (see 6.2), a fire extinguisher shall be mounted on each truck in an easily accessible location. The fire extinguisher shall have a minimum UL rating of 5-B :C.
3.5.3 Rearview mirror. When specified (see 6.2), the truck shall be equipped with a rearview mirror (with mounting arm) mounted on the left-hand side within the operator's field of view as described in SAE J985.
3.6 Human factors engineering. The characteristics of the truck shall provide for operation by the 5th to 95th percentile male and female in accordance with SAE J833. Controls and displays shall be labeled with universal symbols in accordance with SAE J1362. Controls shall be located in accordance with SAE J898 and SAE J297. Instrumentation shall be in accordance with SAE J209.
3.7 Engine. The engine shall be a commercial type water cooled diesel engine. The engine furnished shall operate on fuel conforming to both VV-F-
800, grade DF2 and MIL-T-83133. When specified (see 6.2) the first article test shall include a test for operation with MIL-T-83133.
3.7.1 Engine accessories.
3.7.1.1 Starting priming system. If an auxiliary fluid priming system is necessary to meet the requirements of 3.4, one conforming to MIL-E-52649, type
