III shall be furnished. The size of the primer shall be in accordance with the engine manufacturers recommendations. The primer may be mechanically or electromechanically operated. When the primer is mechanically actuated, it shall be furnished with a total cable length not exceeding 6 feet and a "tee" handle. When the primer is electromechanically actuated, it shall be furnished with a temperature control in accordance with MIL-E-52649.
3.7.1.2 Alternator. The alternator shall provide charge at engine low
idle speed. The regulator shall be integral with the alternator. Alternator performance shall be in accordance with SAE J180.
3.7.1.3 Starting system. A device shall be furnished to prevent reenergizing the starter motor after the engine has been started. The truck shall be provided with an interlock in the starting system or other means to prevent energizing the starter motor, except when the transmission is in the neutral position. The starter shall be heavy duty and shall be in accordance with the engine manufacturer's recommendations.
3.7.1.4 Fuel system. The capacity of the fuel tank shall provide for not less than 8 hours operation when tested in accordance with 4.5.2.2.18. The tank shall be equipped with a safety filler-cap assembly painted with red enamel which shall incorporate a self-closing cap, screw-locking device for the cap, removable strainer, and shall provide for padlocking. A data plate in accordance with 3.26 or truck marking in accordance with 3.27 shall be furnished and marked "Diesel Fuel" in not less than 1-inch letter height located near the fill pipe. The fuel tank shall be equipped with a drainplug
at the lowest point of the tank and be located so that drainage will be into a container without flowing onto any other component of the truck. The
drainplug shall be removable with handtools without the removal of any other component.
3.7.1.5 Air cleaner system. A heavy-duty, dry-type replaceable air cleaner shall be furnished. The air cleaner shall be constructed so as to permit disassembly without tools for servicing without removing any other component except the when the engine cowl, hood, or access plate is opened. A restriction indicator shall be furnished.
3.7.1.6 Governor. A speed-limiting type governor shall be furnished. The engine speed shall not exceed the engine manufacturer's recommended intermittent duty speed.
3.7.1.7 Oil filter. A replaceable full flow heavy duty filter(s) with emergency bypass shall be used. The oil filter shall be mounted in an accessible location for ease of replacement of elements.
3.7.1.8 Oil sampling valve. An oil sampling valve in accordance with MIL- V-81940 shall be provided on the engine. The valve shall be located in such a way as to insure that personnel will not be exposed to danger when taking oil samples with the engine running. The location of the oil tap shall be on the filtered oil gallery such that when samples are taken, it shall be a true representation of oil that is flowing while the engine is running. When specified (see 6.2), an oil sampling valve shall be provided for the transmission. Sampling valve shall be labeled crankcase or transmission , whichever is appropriate to indicate the type of oil sampled.
